Untraditional metamorphosis experimentation

Experimenting with untraditional abstract 3D work

Our challenge here was to create an abstract piece that links to the poem metamorphosis using the skills and products we've recently learnt.
In my mind I created the scene when the hunter first stumbles upon the cave. I first used wire to build up the shape I wanted, keeping in mind to wear the protective goggles and gloves, roll up sleeves etc. After this because of the strange shape I decided to stuff the wire with newspaper to give it that extra strength. I experimented with one coat plaster and fine, even adding powder paint to some to see what sort of effect the coloured plaster gave. With this weird shape infront of me I decided to just keep going adding other materials. I add more scrim so that it was more visible, I added mesh material, threw powder paint straight onto the plaster, glitter, string and then finally I added pennies. The pennies came to me after thinking about our trip to the Yorkshire sculpture park last year. The penny tree on the walk around was so pretty and I feel like it really had a story behind each penny so I added my own pennies into my sculpture.

Experimenting with different plasters and textures eg. Skrim, bubble wrap, mesh fabric

I was just experimenting with different plasters and different textures to see what sort of outcomes I could get. I actually really enjoyed this experimentation I think I produced some really interesting textures in the end. My favourite was the plaster over the bubble wrap. The indentations were really strong and clean.

Plaster over the top of mesh and bubble wrap
Plaster and scrim, gave a hair like quality when removed and produce cross hatch across the plaster
Other side of bubble wrap. Very smooth
