Objects containing meanings, some objects can be something so simple and can be found of the street until you give it a meaning. Theres a lot of beliefs and religions that believe highly that a simple object can have a powerful meaning and become almost holy. For example the cross, the bible or even as simple as a lit candle apparently can depict life. During a session Jon gave us examples, he picked up two objects that were in the room, he told us one was a fertility object and whomever touched it would be gifted with being very fertile, he gave us another almost identical object and told us it didn't have anything and it was just what it was. Automatically half of the class (myself included) didn't want to touch the fertility object but would happily hold the other. That's because we hold great power in how we percept things.
Most people believe in something weather it be god, or be something less consuming like karma, most people do believe in something. So for Jon saying those simple words everyone automatically believed him an gave this simple object that held no connection to fertility the power of fertility, it was almost like a placebo effect, because were told thats what it was thats what we believe. Although saying this most objects do have a meaning, because we give it one. Eg weddings rings, religions give things a lot of different meanings, objects that are passed down through families and have high sentimental value normally have a story and meaning behind it, if the story is removed or the object is broken it becomes meaningless. Another object that is widely known is the cross with in christianity which obviously is the crucifixion of christ its a very holy symbol. If you add a circle in combination with the Latin cross it supposedly gives that cross a never-ending existence/faith. Off religion theres objects such as a crown which gives, immortality, righteousness, victory, triumph, resurrection, symbolic of honour or glory, glory of life after death. And again another example, flame equals eternity? You can literally put a meaning to anything and that is what people will follow and perceive as holy.
We discussed the objects when talking about how people view sculpture and the difference between sculpture and paintings. We discussed how sculpture was more likely to become a ritualistic object rather than a painting. The potency wishing sculpture and how something simple can be viewed time and time again because of the meaning behind it. With this in mind we all created our own very small object that could be kept in our pockets and used as a safety net of sorts. So we could do a small experimentation (kind of) with the objects and see if we reacted in the same way. In the end I came to the conclusion that yes we do in fact ritualise objects and create meanings for meaningless objects. Much more than we would with a 2D painting.
